Movie Review-Death Of A Unicorn

When I saw a preview of "Death Of A Unicorn" earlier this year I thought that this as either going to be a lot of fun (as it looks like a B-Movie that I could enjoy) or it was going to be awful!

Well after being seated inside the theater at the Aviation Mall, the film moved along at a somewhat leisurely pace and the cast was quite interesting. You have Paul Rudd playing a seemingly money hungry lawyer driving to his reclusive millionaire client's (Richard E. Grant) private home with his estranged daughter (Jenna Ortega) next to him and they're both fighting and bickering until the car hits and seemingly kills a unicorn!? Very strange, so they hide the little unicorn in the backseat and upon arrival they're greeted by the offbeat son (brilliantly played by Will Poulter) and the millionaire's wife (Tea Leoni). As business is being settled, the unicorn in the backseat makes noises and of course draws everyone's attention and from there, I'll say no more as what follows is tons of gory jump scares, satire and fantasy.

The film tried too hard to be a horror comedy fantasy that it got bogged down with too many plot points. The film was messy and didn't know what it wanted to be as near the end it also tried to be a father/daughter re-connecting drama!? Too many elements thrown around to be a success. This was Alex Scharfman's first full length feature as a director and if there was someone more accomplished at the helm like Edgar Wright for instance, it might have been more entertaining!

Either way, I've seen worse but I've also seen much much better!
